As stated in The Wall Street Journal:
The Venice Biennale, which opened June 1, has become the Olympics of the contemporary art work, a century-old event in which nations send their most promising artists to exhibit in pavilions and palazzos across the watery city. Instead of medals, artists compete for fame on the global art field.
The 55th Venice Biennale, the world's most prestigious art fair, features national pavilions from 88 countries, 10 presenting work for the first time – including the Vatican. No official theme ties together the pavilions, but several ideas are emerging as favorites, including greed, collective actions and the boundaries of the physical world. The Venice Biennale, which opened June 1, has become the Olympics of the contemporary art work, a century-old event in which nations send their most promising artists to exhibit in pavilions and palazzos across the watery city.
